Cooling (Chillers & Air Conditioners)

As the weather starts to get warmer, you’re probably already thinking about how to beat the summer heat. You can’t control the temperature outside, but you can definitely do it inside your home. All it takes is a proper cooling system.

Now the real question is: Which, between a Chiller and an Air Conditioner, is best for you? Well, that’s exactly what we’re here to find out.

Chillers

A chiller system generally operates on an absorption refrigeration cycle to remove heat from an area. They take hot water, cool it in its liquid form, and this ” chilled ” water circulates through the building.

This water is also circulated through fan-coil units, which allow the liquid to pass through them and thus dehumidify a room.

In addition, there are a couple of different types of chillers, such as air-cooled chillers and water-cooled chillers. The main difference between the two systems is the way they cool the condenser coils to reduce the heat.

One uses air, the other water. In general, air-cooled chillers are installed outside a building, while water-cooled chillers are installed inside.

Air Conditioners

The main purpose of an air conditioning system is to manage the temperature of a room. This can usually work both ways, as many air conditioners can both cool and heat a room.

To cool down a room, air conditioners take in warm air, cool it by removing the heat, and then release cold air.

Like a chiller, an air conditioner also has some sort of condenser to remove heat. In addition, it can also serve as a dehumidifier in the same room.

How Do I Choose Between a Chiller and an Air Conditioner?

Ultimately, both machines have the same objective, namely to cool down the air. However, the manner in which they achieve this is different for each and this, in turn, affects the way they are used.

Normally you will find air conditioners in homes, buildings, and other small spaces to bring down the temperature of the air. In comparison, chillers are generally used in processes to cool down different equipment and machinery.

Most air conditioners can only cool down to a temperature of 60°F (16°C), while chillers can cool water down to 35°F (2°C).

Accordingly, if you are looking to cool down your bedroom or office, an air conditioner is preferable. If you have a more commercially oriented use or need very cold temperatures, a chiller is the better option. You will have to choose between the two in accordance with your needs and usage.
